Member states of the United Nations have criticized the UN Security Council’s inefficiency, saying the council’s working system should be overhauled, Press TV reports.

The debate on the UNSC’s working methods follows the council’s recent failure to convene a meeting on Israel’s war against the besieged Gaza Strip, which left at least 160 Palestinians, including many women and children, dead.

“The [UNS] Council was not able to take a decision to convene a public meeting. A body that is entrusted with the responsibility to uphold international peace and security should be able to do more than that…” Egyptian Ambassador to the UN Mootaz Ahmadein Khalil said.

The debate is the fifth of its kind.

“There has been growing realization that the council’s composition rooted in the situation of 1945, as its working methods, are both divorced from the contemporary reality of international relations. These are exemplified by the fact that the council has shown little interest in consulting with those affected most by its decisions,” India’s Ambassador to the UN, Hardeep Singh Puri said.
